Planning your drayage

Per diem, demurrage and detention are not bad luck. They are planning failures, and most of them are avoidable when the dray is arranged before the container lands rather than after.

Book the dray before the vessel berths

The most expensive drayage move is the one arranged after the container is already burning free time. Send Freight Flex the booking details, the ETA and the delivery location before arrival, and the container gets a carrier, a chassis plan and an appointment strategy waiting for it. Flag anything unusual up front, including overweight boxes that need tri-axle chassis, hazmat placards, or receivers with limited dock hours. When schedules slip, and at ports they do, a dray that was planned early can flex, while a dray arranged in a panic pays whatever the market charges that afternoon. Avoiding expensive per diem charges starts with the calendar, not the invoice dispute.

Sometimes the smartest dray ends at a warehouse

Not every container should ride to its final destination as a container. Transloading moves the box from the port to a local warehouse, strips it, palletizes the freight if needed and sends it onward on LTL or FTL carriers, which arranges deliveries to multiple locations from one box and gets the container back before per diem starts. Long inland moves are worth comparing against intermodal, where the container rides rail for the linehaul and drays on both ends.
